Select Phrases¶
The Select Phrases screen lets you narrow down the Phrase pool to the set you want to practise. The pool has around 6,000 entries — about 240 curated set phrases plus ~5,700 example sentences synthesised from your verb and noun catalogues. The screen shows a live count of how many phrases match your current filters.
Filters¶
- CEFR Level — A1 (Beginner) through C2 (Mastery).
- Frequency — Very Common, Common, or Less Common.
- Topic — limit to one or more categories such as greetings, food, travel, time, …
Tap Matching phrases to browse the full list before confirming the selection.
What's in the Phrases set?¶
Curated set phrases — multi-word chunks of Spanish you'd use as units in conversation:
- Greetings and social phrases — buenos días, mucho gusto, encantado / encantada, de nada, con permiso, …
- Time and date expressions — en punto, hace falta, de vez en cuando, a partir de, …
- Common conversational chunks — a pesar de, sin embargo, por lo menos, desde luego, …
Synthesised example sentences — every example sentence attached to a verb or noun in the bundled catalogues. "Soy de España, pero vivo en Holanda" (from ser), "Quiero comprar una manzana" (from manzana), and so on — thousands of complete Spanish sentences, each drillable on its own.
Synthesised sentences are tagged with a special "Example" topic in addition to any topics they inherit from the parent verb or noun. That makes them easy to toggle on or off as a single bucket: untick Example in the Topic filter to drill only the curated set phrases, or tick only Example to drill nothing but real-world sentences.
Single words like adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions live in the Other Vocabulary section instead.
Word pool vs session size¶
These are two separate things:
- Your phrase pool is the set of phrases eligible to appear in any session — the result of your filters.
- Your session size (set in Settings → Sessions) is how many of those phrases appear in a single sitting (10, 20, 30, 50, or All).
Each session, the app picks the best N phrases from your pool, prioritising unseen and weak ones.
Tips¶
- Topic filtering is especially useful here. Going on a trip? Restrict to Travel + Greetings for a focused phrase pool.
- The Example topic toggle is the most consequential filter on this screen — it controls whether the ~5,700 synthesised example sentences are in your pool. Off = curated set phrases only (~240, very focused); on = the full ~6,000 pool with the example sentences from your verb and noun catalogues mixed in.
- Phrases are best learned as units, not word-by-word. Don't try to translate inside de vez en cuando — learn it as one chunk.
CEFR and Frequency on synthesised sentences
Synthesised example sentences inherit CEFR level and frequency from their parent verb or noun. So "Aprovecho el sol cuando puedo" (from aprovechar, B2) appears at B2 in your filters; "Tomo café por la mañana" (from tomar, A1) appears at A1. The Phrases pool stratifies cleanly across all six CEFR levels, with roughly 12% at A1, 12% at A2, 20% at B1, 22% at B2, 14% at C1, and 20% at C2.
