Words and phrases
Two tiles on the Self Study screen cover the vocabulary that has no hub of its own:
- Phrases — set phrases, and the example sentences of the verbs and nouns. This is the largest pool in the French course: many thousands of sentences, depending on the tenses you study. See Phrases.
- Other Vocabulary — the small single words that are not verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions or numerals. In French these are articles, determiners, conjunctions and interjections. See Other Vocabulary.
Both hubs have Setup, Study and Drills sections. The drill is a flashcard deck for meaning, in either direction.
External dictionary lookups
The pages of French verbs, nouns, phrases and other words have a Dictionaries row near the bottom. Tap it to show chips for three online dictionaries: Linguee, WordReference and Reverso. Tap a chip to look the word up. On iPhone and iPad the page opens in a Safari sheet inside the app; on the Mac it opens in your browser. Linguee and Reverso translate into Dutch when Dutch is your app language, and into English otherwise; WordReference always uses English.
Which dictionaries appear is set in the Spanish course, under Settings → Spanish → Dictionary services, and the same choice applies to French. The French settings have no section of their own for this. If you switch off Linguee, WordReference and Reverso, the row disappears.
