Selecting Verbs

LinguaMorpha includes nearly 800 Spanish verbs. The Select Verbs screen lets you narrow these down to exactly the set you want to practise. There are two different methods to select:

  • Specify criteria such as difficulty, frequency, and topic.
  • Select verbs based on their grammatical character.

Criteria tab

Use the Criteria tab to filter verbs by difficulty, frequency, and topic.

  1. Tap on the CEFR Level row to choose which CEFR levels to include (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2). The bar shows how many levels are selected.
  2. Tap on Frequency to select verbs by their frequency of occurrence.
  3. Tap on Topic to select verbs associated with certain topics, e.g. Art, Body, Education, Emotion, Entertainment, … The Topic list also includes any personal topics you have added yourself (marked with a small person icon — see Personal topics below).

In each of the three selection screens, the number of verbs selected by that single criterion is shown. Tapping the bar shows the actual verbs.

The resulting set of verbs meets all the criteria just specified. The 'Selected Verbs' row displays how many verbs are selected. By tapping it the final selected list of verbs is displayed. If you have been too selective and the resulting set of verbs is empty, the system issues a warning when you attempt to leave the screen.

Personal topics

Personal topics are tags you create yourself — labels like exam, tricky, favourite, or anything else useful for organising your own study. They live alongside the bundled topics in the Topic filter and you can mix them freely with the standard categories.

To add a personal topic, open any verb's detail view (for example by tapping a verb in Conjugation Tables), tap the + at the end of the Topics row, and either type a new tag or pick from your previously-used ones. Once a verb is tagged, the new topic appears in the Topic filter here, marked with a small person icon to distinguish it from the bundled categories.

Personal topics are stored locally on your device and survive app updates.

Verb Groups tab

The other approach to selecting verbs is by their grammatical character. Many verbs are conjugated regularly, but there are also groups of verbs that behave differently. Several verb group categories are distinguished:

  • Basic
  • Stem Changes
  • Yo and Spelling
  • Preterite and Advanced
  • Restricted

User Interface Tip

Tap the name of the verb group category to get an explanation of that category.

Each verb group category contains two or more verb groups. You can include or exclude a particular verb group by tapping the check box.

The Stem Changes category includes the four classic stem-change patterns plus the iar/uar accent-shift group — verbs like enviar, confiar, actuar, continuar where the stem vowel takes a written accent in the present indicative and present subjunctive (envío, actúe) to mark where the spoken stress falls. Nosotros and vosotros keep the regular ending and no accent.

User Interface Tip

Swiping left on a verb group displays an explanation of the verb group.

User Interface Tip

Swiping right shows the list of verbs belonging to this group.
