Phrases
Open the Phrases hub from the Phrases tile on the Self Study screen. The badge under the title ("… of … phrases") shows how many phrases your selection leaves. The phrases come in three groups:
- Set phrases: over 240 fixed expressions that you learn as a whole: greetings and social phrases (buenos dÃas, mucho gusto, de nada), time expressions (de vez en cuando, a veces) and connecting phrases (a pesar de, sin embargo, por lo menos). Some are built around a verb (darse cuenta de, echar de menos).
- Verb example sentences: the example sentences of the verbs, each one practised as a phrase: Soy de España, pero vivo en Holanda. This includes the tense examples, but a tense example is only included when its tense is switched on in Select tenses. If you study the present and the pretérito indefinido, you practise those sentences. Add the subjunctive and its sentences are added.
- Noun example sentences: the example sentences of the nouns, in the same way.
The example sentences make this pool much larger than the set phrases alone. You can practise every example sentence you see in the app.
The hub has these screens:
- Select phrase groups (Setup): choose which groups count.
- Phrases catalogue (Theory): how the pool is built and how to study it.
- Phrase reference (Study): the selected phrases.
- Phrase meaning (Drills): flashcards.
Phrases work best alongside the Verbs and Nouns hubs, not instead of them. They add the ready-made phrases you need in a real conversation. For single words that have no hub, see Other Vocabulary.
