Other Vocabulary

Open this hub from the Other Vocabulary tile on the Self Study screen. It holds the small single words that have no hub of their own. In French there are 27:

  • Articles (4): le / la / l' / les, un / une, des, du / de la / de l'
  • Determiners (6): ce / cet / cette / ces, chaque, tout / toute / tous / toutes, beaucoup de, quelque / quelques, plusieurs
  • Conjunctions (10): et, ou, mais, donc, car, parce que, quand, pendant que, comme, si
  • Interjections (7): bonjour, au revoir, merci, oui, non, félicitations !, incroyable !

Adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions and numerals have their own hubs. For expressions of several words, such as s'il vous plaît, see Phrases.

The hub has these screens:

  • Select word groups (Setup) — choose the categories.
  • Word reference (Study) — the selected words.
  • Word meaning (Drills) — flashcards.

There is no Theory page for this hub in French; the explanations are in the category info sheets instead.

Select word groups. Tap Article, Conjunction, Determiner or Interjection to switch it on or off; each row shows how many words it has. Tap ⓘ for an explanation of the category and a list of its words:

  • Articles — definite le, la, l', les, indefinite un, une, des, and the partitive du, de la, de l' for an unmeasured amount: je bois du café. After a negation the partitive and indefinite become de: je n'ai pas de café.
  • Determiners — the demonstratives ce, cet (before a vowel or mute h: cet homme), cette, ces; chaque and plusieurs, which never change; tout, which agrees; quelques; and beaucoup de, whose de never contracts with an article.
  • Conjunctions — et, ou, mais, donc, car join equal parts; parce que, quand, si, comme, pendant que start a subordinate clause. Si becomes s' before il (s'il), but never before elle.
  • Interjections — words that are a whole utterance on their own. French puts a space before ! and ?: incroyable !

The line at the top shows how many words you selected, and how many are left after the level set in Select word scope; topics don't apply to this hub. If you tick nothing, the screen warns you that the drill will be empty, with the choices Stay and select and Go back anyway.

Word reference. A list of the selected words with their translations and a search field that matches the word or its translation. Nothing is recorded here. Tap a word to open its page: the word, its translation and category, its Level, Frequency and Topics, and the Dictionaries row.

Word meaning. A flashcard deck for the meaning of the selected words, in either direction. It works like Noun meaning. Every answer is recorded.
