Phrases

Open the Phrases hub from the Phrases tile on the Self Study screen. The badge under the title ("… of … phrases") shows how many phrases your selection leaves. The phrases are of two kinds:

  1. Set phrases: over 270 fixed expressions that you learn as a whole: greetings and social phrases (buenos días, mucho gusto, de nada), time expressions (de vez en cuando, a veces) and connecting phrases (a pesar de, sin embargo, por lo menos). Some are built around a verb (darse cuenta de, echar de menos).
  2. Example sentences: about 25,000 sentences written for the verbs and nouns, each one practised as a phrase: Soy de España, pero vivo en Holanda. Every sentence records the tenses it uses and the verbs in it, and only counts when its tenses are switched on in Select tenses. If you study the present and the pretérito indefinido, you practise the sentences that use only those. Add the subjunctive and the sentences that use it are added.

You can practise every example sentence you see in the app.

The hub has these screens:

  • Phrases or sentences (Practice): choose which kinds count.
  • Select tenses (Practice): the tenses the sentences may use.
  • Phrases catalogue (Theory): how the pool is built and how to study it.
  • Reference (Study) — opens Phrase reference: the selected phrases.
  • Meaning (Practice) — opens Phrase meaning: flashcards.

Phrases work best alongside the Verbs and Nouns hubs, not instead of them. They add the ready-made phrases you need in a real conversation. For single words that have no hub, see Other Vocabulary.
