Pick the correct article

Pick the correct article is a quick drill that tests one thing: el or la? There is no typing and no self-grading, just two buttons.

How it works

  1. A noun appears without its article.
  2. Tap el or la at the bottom of the screen.
  3. The card flashes green or red and turns over. The back shows the noun with its correct article (in green if you were right, red if not) and its translation. For a noun that takes either article, the back says both are accepted, and either answer counts as correct.
  4. After about two seconds the card turns back and the next noun appears.

The speaker button on the card reads the noun aloud.

Which nouns appear. The drill uses the nouns in your selection that take an article and have a gender. It leaves out nouns of more than one word and nouns ending in -s. When your selection contains gender traps (nouns whose ending points to the wrong gender, such as mano or día), about seven cards in ten are drawn from them.

The session

  • Each noun appears once per session. A session asks the number of questions set in Questions per session (Settings → Study). The nouns are picked from your selection based on your answer history and your Learning pace.
  • The Incorrect answers switch at the top limits the session to nouns whose article you have got wrong before.
  • The line at the top shows your score so far and how many candidate cards your selection gives.
  • At the end, tap New session to start again.

Every answer is recorded against the noun, so nouns you get wrong come back more often in later sessions.

Tips

  • Run this drill alongside Noun meaning, not before it. Knowing the article of a noun whose meaning you don't know is of little use.
  • If you find yourself guessing, read Noun gender first: most nouns follow predictable patterns.
  • It works well with a narrow word scope. Right after a Noun meaning session on one topic, run this drill on the same topic to fix both the meaning and the gender.
  • For nouns whose meaning changes with the article, use Meaning changes with gender instead.
